Tom Platz Bodybuilding Biography

Tom Platz Bodybuilder The Golden Eagle

Thomas Steven Platz was born on June 26, 1955 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma and is known by his many fans all over the world either as the "The Golden Eagle" or the more appropriate nickname of "The Quadfather:" His massive quadriceps have been the envy of bodybuilders all over the world since he started competing in 1973.

That first competition that he entered in 1973 was the Mr.Adonis competition, which he won. Tom continued to compete as an amateur until he won his first World Amateur Championships in the middleweight division in 1978, which was the same year he completed his degree at Wayne State University.

Tom decided that he wanted to win Mr.Olympia to prove that he is the best professional bodybuilder in the world but things did not go as planned. Tom arrived in California with $50 in his pocket and plenty of motivation. Tom was doing high intensity training with a very high volume, which is what started a training revolution in the bodybuilding community.

Tom is still today, more than 30 years after he retired, rated as having the best legs in bodybuilding history. With a Masters degree in Fitness Science as well as Bachelors in Science Physiology and Nutrition which he got from Wayne State University and Michigan State University. Tom studied farther at UCLA and also gained a Masters in Business Administration.

It is unfortunate that Tom never won Mr.Olympia competing as a professional. The closest he came to achieving his dream of becoming the best professional bodybuilder was in 1981 when he placed third. The year before Tom had claimed the IFBB Mr.Universe win which placed him as one of the top 10 bodybuilders.

Between 1979 and 1986 Tom always placed in the top ten at the Mr.Olympia competition and is still today extremely sort after as a public speaker on health, nutrition and bodybuilding. Although Tom officially retired in 1987 he made a comeback in 1995 and won an Honorary Mr. America – AAU.

Tom has written two books on bodybuilding and acted in 7 movies ranging from ‘Who killed Johnny Love’ to Twins made with Arnold and Danny DeVito in 1988. Tom is now dedicated to giving back to the sport of bodybuilding, which he says has been very good to him.
