IFBB Mr. Olympia Contest

The History of Mr. Olympia

Joe Weider created the Mr. Olympia contest because he saw too many bodybuilders retiring young after winning the Mr. Universe. Joe wanted a contest that could determine who was truly the King of Bodybuilding, as a matter of fact at the first Mr. Olympia in 1965 Larry Scott was given a crown. The concept was also that a bodybuilder could win an unlimited about of times, so he could go on the defend his title for years as many bodybuilders have done.

Joe says he first got the idea for the name from Olympia beer, but went on to think about how it brought up visions of the Gods of Olympus such as Zeus and Hercules.

The Mr. Olympia contest was first held in 1965 and has now become the "Super Bowl of Bodybuilding" with the winner being recognized as the worlds top bodybuilder.

The prize money for the winner was originally $1,000 and is now up to $250,000.

The 1975 Mr. Olympia was captured in the classic docudrama "Pumping Iron" and the 2012 Olympia was the subject of the new film "Generation Iron" which is this generations version of Pumping Iron.
